Be a Journalist
1. The Stewardship Question:
What do we do when information arrives faster than understanding?
Inspired by the discipline of journalism: verifying information before publication, distinguishing fact from interpretation, and remaining accountable to reality even when reality is inconvenient.
AI systems can generate summaries, recommendations, explanations, and answers in seconds. They dramatically reduce the time required to access information. Yet access is not understanding. Information increasingly arrives already interpreted and compressed.
Be a Journalist is the discipline of investigating before concluding, verifying before repeating, and remaining willing to revise a position when better evidence emerges.
This is the second gate of responsible judgment.
2. The Practice
When information appears convincing, urgent, emotionally satisfying, or immediately useful, consider the following questions:
Identify the claim.
What exactly is being asserted?
Dig through opacity.
Where does this information originate? Can I identify the original source? What sources may
have been omitted?
Inspect the compression.
Has this information been summarized, simplified, or condensed?
What may have disappeared during that process?
Look for missing context.
What information would change the meaning of what I am seeing?
Is there an alternative explanation?
Separate fact from interpretation.
Which elements are observable? Which elements are conclusions?
Test confidence against evidence.
Is confidence supported by evidence, or merely by presentation?
Slow the conclusion.
Information may arrive instantly and in abundance. Understanding rarely does.
